今回の現代アメリカ基礎講座は、特別企画として米国国務省のＤ．キャサリーン･スティーブンス首席副次官補に、ブッシュ政権の日本および東アジア地域における外交政策とその取り組みについてお話いただきます（同時通訳付）。　スティーブンス首席副次官補は今年の６月に、国務省東アジア・太平洋局でクリストファー･ヒル国務次官補に次ぐ重要なポストに着任し、東アジア地域における米国の外交政策を担う中心人物の一人です。（経歴はこちらをご参照下さい。）

学生の皆さんにとっては国務省の高官と直接対話ができる貴重な機会です。是非事前に質問をご準備の上、ふるってご参加下さい。なお、講師の意向により、今回の講座の参加申込みは学生（院生も含む）の方のみに限らせていただきます。セミナー当日、受付にて学生証を確認させていただきますので、必ずご持参下さるようお願いします。

Ｄ．キャサリーン･スティーブンス首席副次官補

Ｄ．キャサリーン･スティーブンス氏は、2005年6月に東アジア太平洋局の首席副次官補に就任し、民間外交、地域安全保障・政策問題、および管轄部署の管理を含む様々な局全体の職責を監督しています。特に米国とオーストラリア、日本、韓国、ニュージーランド、および太平洋諸島国との関係を維持･調整することは、スティーブン氏の重要任務となっています｡

スティーブンス氏は米国国務省の高官の一人で、公使の地位にあります。2001年から2003年にかけて、ヨーロッパ･ユーラシア局の副次官補として、コソボの将来設計に関わり、NATO主導のボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナでの任務を完了し、欧州−大西洋岸諸国での西バルカン半島の統合促進に貢献しました。

スティーブンス氏は、1978年に米国国務省に入省し、中国、韓国、ユーゴスラビア、北アイルランド、およびポルトガルで外交任務に携わってきました。ワシントンでは国務省と国家安全保障会議で職務を遂行しました。

スティーブンス氏はアリゾナ州出身で、プレスコット大学で東アジア研究の学士号、ハーバード大学で修士号を取得しました。香港大学とオックスフォード大学に留学し、さらに韓国では平和部隊のボランティアとして活動した経験があります｡　セルビア−クロアチア語と韓国語に堪能で、広東語と北京語を理解します。息子が1人おり、オリン大学の一年生です。

Term of Appointment: June 2005 to present

Kathleen Stephens assumed her duties as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs in June 2005. In that capacity she oversees a variety of Bureau-wide responsibilities, including public diplomacy, regional security and policy issues, and post management. In addition, she has particular responsibility for the management of U.S. relations with Australia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and the Pacific Island states.

Ms. Stephens is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service, rank of Minister Counselor. From 2001 to 2003, she was Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, focussed on addressing Kosovo's future status, completing the NATO-led mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and accelerating the integration of the western Balkans in Euro-Atlantic institutions.

Ms. Stephens joined the Foreign Service in 1978. She has served in numerous U.S. diplomatic missions overseas, including in China, Korea, Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, and Portugal. In Washington, she has held assignments both at the Department of State and at the National Security Council.

Ms. Stephens grew up in Arizona. She holds a B.A. in East Asian studies from Prescott College and a graduate degree from Harvard University. She also studied at the University of Hong Kong and Oxford University. Ms. Stephens was a Peace Corps volunteer in Korea. Her foreign languages are Korean and Serbo-Croatian, with limited competence in Cantonese and standard Chinese. She has one son, a freshman at Olin College.
