September 14, 2009, Shimonoseki - The Consulate assisted with a four-day goodwill visit to Shimonoseki by the USS Lassen, during which crew members volunteered at a local children’s home, challenged Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces in friendly games of softball and soccer, and hosted an onboard reception for local VIPs.
Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Mark S. Dieker and Consul for Management and Consular Affairs Juan “Jay” Avecilla (pictured far left and right) enjoyed meeting local opinion leaders and introducing them to the USS Lassen’s Commanding Officer, Commander H.B. Le (middle). Shimonoseki Mayor Tomoaki Nakao (second from right) and Shimonoseki Assembly Chairman Hiroshi Sekitani (second from left) were among the notable guests. The highlight of the evening was when one of the guests from the Chamber of Commerce brought fugu (blowfish), Shimonoseki’s local specialty, for the sailors to enjoy.
The USS Lassen (DDG 82) is forward deployed to Yokosuka as part of the operating forces of the U.S. 7th Fleet. The visit to Shimonoseki by the USS Lassen demonstrates the United States’ commitment to the defense of Japan and to ensuring stability in the region.
