July 10, 2009, Sasebo – James P. Zumwalt, Charge d'Affaires of the U.S Embassy, gave a speech to more than 100 Japan America Society (JAS) members on “the US-Japan Alliance: A Partnership Extending to the Community Level.”
In the speech, the Charge d’Affaires said Sasebo reminded him of San Diego, his hometown, where, like in Sasebo, the US Navy and the local community cooperate closely and value each other. With regard to the Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo (CJAS), Mr. Zumwalt also highlighted its excellent record when it comes to environmental protection and historical preservation – achievements that have been recognized by both the U.S. Navy and local city officials.
Mr. Zumwalt, who studied in Japan as a high school student, also stressed the importance of continuing to encourage cultural exchange among young Japanese and Americans to ensure the next generation helps sustain the special relationship the US and Japan enjoy.
