Exchange Programs Improve English Proficiency

Aug. 19

Fukuoka - Principal Officer Joyce Wong spoke to members of the Fukuoka Oakland Friendship Association about the importance of English language proficiency for international communication and understanding. She noted the widespread use of English as a common language among the citizens of Asian countries, and encouraged audience members to maintain a lifelong interest in the study of English. Ms. Wong also congratulated association members for the special role they have played in keeping ties between Fukuoka and Oakland strong during the 44 years that the two cities have enjoyed a sister city relationship. After her presentation, Ms. Wong spoke with high school students who had just returned from a student exchange program in Oakland, including one young woman whose mother had participated in the same program nearly 25 years ago.
