Emergency Medical Information for Visitors

In the unfortunate event that a visitor is injured or becomes ill during his or her visit to Japan, the information below should be helpful in acquiring emergency health care and for preparing an emergency health care plan prior to a visit.

  1. First and foremost when in Tokyo, assistance from police, fire, or ambulance services can be quickly obtained by dialing 119. An English-speaking person is available at this number. As a backup, you may request assistance through the Embassy operator by dialing (03)3224-5000. All incidents requiring emergency assistance must be reported to the MDAO Duty Officer; dial 090-3598-1193.

  2. U.S. military hospitals and clinics are open 24 hours a day for emergencies. Routine medical and dental support is also available. Most bases have a Tricare service office. However, use of military medical facilities by non-uniformed personnel or those who do not receive military retiree benefits is very limited.

  4. As the military medical facilities are at least 90 minutes away from the center of Tokyo, you may prefer to use local medical facilities, which generally provide excellent care. For uniformed military members and those on Tricare seeking an appointment with a medical facility in Japan, call SOS international toll free at 005-316-50291. They have doctors standing by for phone consultations, and they can direct you to the best facility in your local area. The primary facility used by embassy personnel is the Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic at 03-3436-3028 (see map). They also accept Tricare. This and other English-speaking medical facilities can be found online here. In an emergency, the hotel concierge can also direct you to a facility staffed with English-speaking personnel.

  5. Medical Insurance. Visitors to Japan should check with their health care insurance providers to find which facilities, if any, will accept their insurance and how to process claims if necessary. If your insurance does not cover overseas travel, it is best to acquire traveler's insurance prior to departing the U.S.
