
President Bush Nominates Robert M. Gates as New Secretary of Defense (11/9/06)
On November 8 at a press conference in Washington, President Bush announced that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has resigned, and he named former CIA Director Robert M. Gates as the replacement. Gates has a long career at the CIA and was the director from 1991 till 1993. Currently, Gates is serving as President of Texas A&M University.

2006 U.S. Midterm Elections (10/31/06)
The elections on November 7, 2006, in which Americans vote for their congressional representatives but not for president, are known as midterm elections. On Election Day, Americans will elect members of the House of Representatives to two-year terms and about one-third of their senators to six-year terms. Thirty-six states also will elect governors this year, and other local municipalities will elect their legislators as well.
