Passport Renewals

By mail (for adults age 16 and older)
Your passport may be renewed by mail only if:
- You are currently in Japan and have a mailing address in Japan
- Your most recent full validity passport was issued within the last 15 years and when you were age 16 or over
- The passport you are submitting is not damaged
If all of these requirements are met, you may mail your application package to the Consular office in your district.
Naha Applicants:
Please note that except for residents of the outer islands, our Consulate in Naha does not accept passport applications by mail.
Please send:
- Current or expired passport
- Signed and completed form DS-82 (Fees and instructions provided on this form are for domestic use. See below link for application fees in Japan.)
- Provide one passport photo
- One self-addressed LetterPack 500 envelope (for persons using an APO address, one self-addressed envelope)
- Postal money order

Adults (age 16 and older) application in person
- Submit current or expired passport
- If the most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years and when you were age 16 or over, completed form DS-82. Otherwise, completed form DS-11
- Present one valid proof of ID
- Provide one passport photo
- Bring one self-addressed LetterPack 500 envelope (for persons using APO address, one self-addressed envelope)

Children under 16
- All applicants (children) must appear in person accompanied by both parents.
- Submit current or expired passport
- Present proof of parent-child relationship
- Present parents' valid IDs
- Provide one passport photo
- Complete form DS-11
- Bring one self-addressed LetterPack 500 envelope (for persons using APO address, one self-addressed envelope)
- Submit Notarized DS-3053 (PDF - 157kb) if either parent cannot be present. Also bring a photocopy of the non-applying parent's ID.

NOTICE :
- Although passport application forms instruct applicants to send applications to the National Passport Processing Center in Philadelphia, PA, please do not send passport application packages to the U.S. Instead, please mail passport application packages to the Consular office in your district.
- Please note that Expedited Services and Overnight Delivery are not available to applicants residing outside of the U.S. If you need a passport for emergency or imminent travel, please contact the Consular office in your district to apply for an Emergency passport.

Passports for Children:
As of February 1, 2008, the two-parent consent requirement for all minors' passport services was extended to include all children under age 16. Both parents are required to be present to provide signatures at the time of application. For more information please see here.
