Federal Benefits Office Hours and Contact Info

The U.S. Embassy assists customers in:

Tokyo, Chiba, Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama, Shizuoka, Tochigi, Yamagata, and Yamanashi.

If you are a federal benefits customer in the above-mentioned areas, an appointment is required for assistance. You can contact the Embassy via phone at (03) 3224-5000. From the recorded phone system, please press #2 for Social Security/Federal Benefits questions and then leave your name and number. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Mandatory Interviews at Consulate General Osaka-Kobe:
Please note that Mandatory Social Security interviews at the U.S. Consulate General Osaka-Kobe are held every Wednesday (except U.S. and Japanese holidays),

at 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

When you visit the Consulate, please bring the following required documents:  

  • Valid government-issued photo ID – i.e. passport or Basic Resident Registration Card (Jumin Kihon Daicho Card)
  • SS-5-FS Application for a Social Security Card (PDF - 164KB), and
  • Documents mailed from the SSA Tokyo or Manila Offices, if available
  • Any other documents requested from the SSA Tokyo or Manila offices  

Note to Sapporo-area customers:
The Sapporo Consular section takes appointments Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. (except U.S. and Japanese holidays). Please call the Consular Section at (011) 641-1115 for inquiries and appointments.

Note to Fukuoka-area customers:
The Fukuoka Consular section assists Federal Benefits customers on an appointment basis. Please call the Consular Section at (092) 751-9331 for inquiries and appointments.
